In case you were wondering, some of the parts to make my groovy Rough Riders were sculpted by Rob at Curious Constructs.

WIP-Praetorian 40th Line Regiment.

Its been a fortnight since I reorganised my praetorian forces so I thought it would be a good time for a progress update. I have started on the first 40 men. They will form a blob squad of 30 (Sergeants with power weapons, and a commissar which is still to come) with a command squad of 4 grenade launchers and a special weapon squad of 3 grenade launchers. I have a second one of these 40 man firing blobs to do as well. I can't decide whether to convert up some plasma rifles to go in the main blob? If I do want to, I will convert up 6 from the 2nd batch of men and swap 3 into this lot. OK! On to some pictures and remember these are still WIP.

I have been doing them in semi-batch painting, so some are closer to being finished then others.
Grenades

Yes, that's a 'Caine' officer in the back.

I am toying with the idea of doing red-ish gun barrel holes (from the laser fire)

Double this and I can form a nice square :)

I was using natural light for the photos but the dogs outside were way too interested!
"Get out the way, your casting shadows!"
The brown one is ours and the black one we are dog sitting for my parents.
I'm sure the Sarg at the front is yelling "Fire at the giant dogs!"

Lighting bolts on the power swords. I don't totally love these. Suggestions anyone?
Also, I started to add a blue glow/ hue around the swords but it still needs work.

Finally, here we have the chap that was sending me crazy when I first started!
seeing that he's 'different' I made him a corporal for showing initiative.

I'm currently waiting on some tufts for the bases but I will also add slate and high grassy bushes like on my fleet regiment models-
-like these guys.

So, what do people think? Still not too early down the painting path to change stuff if you have suggestions, and obviously still more work to do. Man, this takes forever!

  1. As a Mordian player I get similarly enthusiastic about firing lines like this - beautiful work! I have to say I love the power weapons with glowing blue, but I suppose it's down to preference. For WIP shots of batch painted models the quality is excellent.

  2. On the flipside, I'm no fan of the glowing blue, but there ya go.

Otherwise, WOW.... Those Piths look fantanstic.

  3. Awesome! I'm really digging how those are coming along - the red glowy barrels on the lasrifles are a nice touch. Keep up the stellar work, man!

  4. Doesnt take you long! Great work so far. I'm not a fan of the lightning on the sword. I like to pick a dark colour and highlight it lots, Blue is probably the colour to go for in the this case!

  6. I accidentally deleted this from an Anonymous blogger:

"I love what you have done with them. Inspiring! I have a combined Tallarn and Praetorian force. As to the lightning on the sword, to each their own. I prefer a bright platinum base with an edge that screams for blood. Keep up the exemplary work!"

-Thanks! Tallarn and Praetorian really do go well together. I just need to fix up those swords now to finish off this unit. keep an eye out for their finished post. ;)
